Does 1 Million New Users Mean MySpace Is Coming Back?

on Feb 14, 2012
Does 1 Million New Users Mean MySpace Is Coming Back?Yesterday something occurred that we haven’t seen in a long, long time. That rare creature was positive news about the oft-maligned MySpace. The latest incarnation that is Justin Timberlake fueled (heck, he played Sean Parker in The Social Network so why not?!) project registered an increase of 1 million new users in January. Not bad considering most charts about people using MySpace look like a backwards hockey stick.

5 Excellent Cloud Tools You Should Be Using

on Nov 27, 2011
5 Excellent Cloud Tools You Should Be UsingIt seems like everything is moving to the cloud from documents to photos to podcasts; plus more and more services are implementing cloud storage for security reasons. While 10 years ago you needed to have actual space on your computer or mobile device in order to save and access files, now you really don’t need much because free cloud storage is everywhere. Since there are so many new and useful cloud tools that are regularly popping up on the scene, I decided to share 5 that I feel are extremely

YouTube Offers Chance to Buy Music Merchandise

YouTube Offers Chance to Buy Music MerchandiseYouTube gets 800 million visitors a month. A lot of that is focused on music videos. As a classic rock fan I can now see video of bands from when I was growing up that I only dreamed of seeing when these acts were in their heyday. I now have to avoid getting caught up in a jaunt down nostalgia lane on YouTube from which I could lose significant junks of my life. Well, the folks at YouTube ain’t stupid and they have now opened up the opportunity for partners to sell merchandise, concert tickets,

Feeling the Earth Move: A Digital Music Revolution

Feeling the Earth Move: A Digital Music RevolutionIf you’re reading this blog, you probably check the internet. And if you checked the internets yesterday, or live on the East Coast, you know we had a minor, yet vivid plate tectonic event (aka earthquake).  While many rushed on Twitter or Facebook to share their best witticism or plea for a hug (guilty) - people also began to share music that connected, comforted, and best summed up the events of the day.

Red Bull, Cultural Patronage, and Socially Sharing Creativity

My relationship with music is a pretty active one. I’ve been a club DJ for a little under 9 years (it’s more of an expensive hobby rather than a separate career), so it’s important for me keep up on new (and discovering old) music. Which is how I happen to have come across the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) back in the early 2000’s.

The Future of Music: How to become a Kid Rock fan in 2011

on Aug 22, 2011
The Future of Music: How to become a Kid Rock fan in 2011I’ll admit it: I don’t think about the “future” of music that often. I’ve been listening to a steady rotation of musical soundtracks, country music, and late-90s soft rock ever since late-90s soft rock was current, and while I’ve made the switch from CDs to iTunes, I haven’t been more creative than that. However, the subject keeps bubbling back to the surface with the launch of new platforms like Spotify and Google Music, the rise of mobile applications, and even

Spotify: Changing the face of social music consumptionLet’s check out the current social music consumption landscape: iTunes rules at music organization. Pandora takes the cake for music discovery. Grooveshark has the gold medal for playlist creation through streaming. Turntable revolutionized the game of social music enjoyment and Indaba has connected social to the music creation process. Nearly two weeks ago, Spotify came to the U.S. and changed the face of social music consumption for good.

You Are What You Share: Why Pitchfork Gets It

on Jul 13, 2011
You Are What You Share: Why Pitchfork Gets ItGearing up for Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival this weekend, I was checking out the music lineup when I stumbled across the official festival playlist. With free, streaming tracks from some of the best new bands appearing at the event, I had to pass this find along—I didn’t even have to pause before sharing with the people in my social circle.

Facebook’s Potential in Social Music Discovery

on May 26, 2011
Facebook’s Potential in Social Music DiscoveryWith personalized Internet radio and music platforms becoming more prominent, integrating  social networks have become a key component to online music discovery. Aside from learning  that Robert Scoble and I have similar tastes in music (The Rolling Stones, OutKast, and Madonna  to name a few),  I’ve also deduced that Facebook has the capacity to play a crucial role in users’ online music discovery process.

What’s Next? Marketing to Match Your Mood

It’s just another manic Monday, which means I’m in the mood for chocolate, Ramen noodles and movies that don’t make me think. The last thing I want to do is cook, so this would be a great time to show me an ad for a pizza delivery service that includes fresh-baked, chocolate chip cookies with every order.
