Google+ Spreads to AdSense, Will It Spread to the Whole Web?

on Jan 26, 2012
Google+ Spreads to AdSense, Will It Spread to the Whole Web?Seen in the wild (well, OK, on this very site): The “Recommend this on Google” hover box at the bottom is new, I’ve never seen it before (then again, my ads are usually from FM). It’s what we in the biz call a “social overlay” or a “social ad” – and as far as I can tell, it’s only available to those advertisers who use Google AdSense.

Beware of fake Matts leaving comments

on Dec 12, 2011
A lot of the time, I dispel misconceptions by leaving comments on blogs. That works great, except for the rare occasion when someone pretends to be me and leaves a rude, fake, or otherwise untrue blog comment. Over the previous decade, I’ve only seen 4-5 times where someone impersonated me. But in the last month, I’ve seen at least three nasty comments written by “fake Matt Cutts” impersonators. The first fake-Matt comment I remember was over Marketing Pilgrim around November 14th,

Is Advertising Revenue Dead as a Blogging Income Stream?

on Mar 23, 2011
Earlier in the week I observed a conversation between two Internet marketing bloggers on Twitter which grabbed my attention. The topic of conversation? Monetizing blogs by selling advertising directly to advertisers. Their conclusion on the topic? It’s a dead and obsolete method of making money. It was a fascinating conversation to observe. They gave some solid-sounding reasons for their conclusions, including: As I watched the conversation unfold I found myself agreeing with some of these points,

Facebook “Accidentally Outing Gay Users”

on Oct 23, 2010
I came across this article today, called “Facebook ‘accidentally outing gay users’ to outside firms through targeted ads“, which I thought was kind of interesting, simply because this use of demographic targeting as a method of advertising has been used for years now.
