Back in May we reported from the MTA Unconference regarding MTA Chief Jay Walder’s comments around when cell signals would be available in the subway underground. It looks like major progress has been made towards allowing you to make and receive calls and to play Zynga games on the subway.
The largest round of transit cuts in NYC begins this Sunday — technically most of the changes begin on Monday due to weekend service changes. Many of the bus routes and subway lines are changing –some routes are going to be discontinued and almost every route will have schedule changes.
This morning at the Internet Week HQ in NYC, ReadWriteWeb co-editor Marshall Kirkpatrick provided a keynote discussion regarding his thoughts and research around the real-time web. The event was setup in the barcamp style with several discussion rooms to house breakout sessions throughout the day. You can watch some of the sessions on Justin.tv.
The New York City Council Committee on Technology will hold another open discussion later this month. This time the session will discuss open data standards for city data. From the city announcement, “This bill, Introduction 029-2010 (formerly Intro. 991-2009), is an effort to increase government transparency and facilitate easier access to public data.
As part of Internet Week NY, the VC Bootcamp is presenting a live discussion for entrepreneurs seeking advice on venture capital and angel financing. Presenters will discuss a broad range of topics regarding the venture capital fundraising process, such as strategies to secure an initial meeting with an investor, how to best present your idea, financing strategies and alternatives, overview and timing of the process, identifying and negotiating key business and legal points of the deal, and how to position the company for a successful liquidity event.

This week brings the third annual InternetWeek to NYC. There are a wide variety of events across the city. Many are already sold out – you can find a full list on the IWNY site. Check Gary’s Guide for a comprehensive list of events in your city. Here are a few events that still have open seats.
Before we discuss new NYC-based startup ZipGigs, I want to take you back to an earlier time. A time when I was living in Atlanta and delivery service Kozmo had just hit the scene. I loved and hated Kozmo. I loved it because they would bring me a box of Entenmann’s donuts and a movie anytime I wanted it. I hated it because, before Kozmo, I would have to get in the car and drive to the 7-11 or Blockbuster to get junk food or a movie. The service had a very loyal following – a good number of my friends had used the service on a semi-regular basis for food, drinks and movies. Their ability to deliver Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in just a few minutes turned many on to the delivery service.
NYC will host the third annual Internet Week next week. There about 150 events across the city in a wide variety of content types and parties.
